Kindred People. Awaken Murrup

Kindred People is an Indigenous-led gathering of global First Nations artists, Elders, Knowledge Holders, students and community, coming to Monash University on Boonwurrung Country.

Guided by culture, the festival centres Indigenous knowledges, creativity and connection through ceremony, performance, dialogue and time spent together on Country. It is a space to listen deeply, to learn, and to experience Indigenous creativity as living, relational and grounded in place. Led by Professor N’arwee’t Carolyn Briggs AM, Senior Boon Wurrung Elder and member of the Kindred People Steering Committee and is curated by Gunditjmara man Tom Molyneux.

Taking place across Monash campuses, Kindred People brings together communities from Australia and across the world in a shared invitation: to gather with care, and to engage with Indigenous voices, stories and ways of knowing.

Clear was entrusted to observe, listen, and create the strategy and vision, branding and campaign for Kindred People Awaken ‘Murrup’; the creative spirit that lives within each of us. Clear became the brand conduit between traditional owners and Monash University to form and shape the festival’s creative vision.

The visual identity and design language were developed in partnership with Gumbaynggirr artist and activist Aretha Brown, weaving together a constellation of symbols, each filled with metaphors, knowledge, protest, optimism, and change. A customised wordmark using stylised graphic lettering was developed to complement Aretha’s work, supporting and reinforcing her geometric and rhythmic structures, creating a flexible, distinctive, and identifiable festival brand built on connection.

For me, art is cultural memory; it carries our songlines, our histories, and the power to unlearn, relearn, and rise together.

Indigenous knowledges are living knowledges. It is carried through language, culture, relationships and responsibilities that continue across generations.

This festival has been built through relationships, and a commitment to supporting the breadth of our knowledges to rise up together — ‘kummargi yulendj gadhaba’.
