With a single word, we can connect… Wominjeka
A living centre led by First Nations voices, First Peoples is the very first permanent Indigenous exhibition space at Bunjilaka, Melbourne Museum.
Clear worked closely with Museums Victoria curatorial staff and ‘Yulendj’ knowledge group to develop the vision for Bunjilaka and the campaign for the First Peoples exhibition. Yulendj is the name that members of the Bunjilaka Community Reference Group chose to describe their role, and comprises a group of 16 respected community members and Elders from across Victoria.
Inspired by one Kulin nation word—Wominjeka (Welcome)—the exhibition invites visitors to connect, explore and embrace our shared history, introducing this important word into the Western vernacular.
The Yulendj people contributed stories, objects and deep cultural and historical knowledge with great heart and generosity, to form the exhibition space and guide the accompanying campaign. The diverse languages of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can be heard in audio throughout First Peoples.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors to this website are advised that the following material may contain images, voices and names of First Peoples who have passed.

Bunjilaka continues to evolve for Victorians, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, and to comprehend, share, and pass on the continuing story of Victoria’s first people.
