Welcome back to the Isolation Diaries, our weekly round-up of the things that bring us joy, keep us creatively motivated and help us unwind. What have you been up to?

From a London-based institute and architectural practice, Real Review is a contemporary culture publication that interrogates our current mood and reviews reality. Issue 9 is the latest, but the full back catalogue is available online should you wish to kick off from the beginning. It’s Nice That’s Lucy Bourton makes a worthy comparison of preparing a dish to working in design in Pancakes, Dollops of Jiang and Kale Pesto, a collection of recipes written and beautifully visualised by a group of creatives. Medium has recently created a secondary platform, Momentum: a movement blog, where you can read stories by those who need their voices heard.

We’re gearing up to travel again, starting with Tasmania. Presented by David Attenborough, this doco will give you a pretty different perspective on the island state. Koyaanisqatsi is a cult experimental film directed by Godfrey Reggio, set to music composed by Phillip Glass. Part of a trilogy that explores the relationship between humans, nature and technology, the title Koyaanisqatsi translates to crazy life in turmoil, or out of balance. And if you’re a follower of classical music, you’ll probably know this year marks 30 years for Richard Tognetti as Artistic Director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. They’re celebrating with a free, week-long programme of premieres, rebroadcasts, and special film screenings.

Holding the world record for paper plane flights, John Collins is known as ‘The Paper Airplane Guy’. We’ve been practising our own, after he let us in on his secrets. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll beat his record. Satelight Design is an award-winning studio that believes in creating lighting as a language, with most of their products designed as a strong architectural element or art piece within a space. Watch the design process for the Gatsby pendant light here. While it’s definitely getting chilly, we’re still braving the cold and packing up our blankets and baskets. Broadsheet recently published a list of their favourite picnic spots around Melbourne, so we strongly feel we should all just pretend winter isn’t a thing right now.

This week, we’re loving Soul Clap’s Tempo Dreams, the ultimate for feel-good music to work along to (and maybe to enjoy with a Friday afternoon beverage, if you’re so inclined). Clear’s recent playlist, Collaborate, is a compilation that brings together our favourite artists working together, reminiscent of what we like to practice as a studio. And in the latest episode of the Kill Your Darlings podcast, the team gets together (but remotely) to discuss the topic of human-animal relationships in literature, in their review of The Octopus & I by Erin Hortle, and the more human-human relationships in the acclaimed TV adaptation of Normal People by Sally Rooney, which has been reviewed before by the KYD team.
